NRL news 2022: The Mole

The Sea Eagles have signed the younger brother of Eels star Ryan Matterson.

Dean Matterson, 24, had a breakout year for Mounties in the NSW Cup, winning the club’s player of the year award.

A ball-playing lock of similar mould to his 27-year-old brother, Matterson attracted the eye of several NRL clubs – including Parramatta.

But he decided to make his own way and saw Manly as a club where he has a chance of breaking into the top grade next season.

« Dean is around 100 kilos and has good ball skills, much like Ryan, » his manager Gavin Orr told Wide World of Sports.

« He was offered longer deals elsewhere but decided to back himself and sign for just the one season at Manly.

« Hopefully he can really establish himself and then get himself a better deal for the future.

« He was impressed by Manly and thought while it would have been good to play in the same system as Ryan at the Eels, it’s best to go it on his own at Manly. »
