Bathurst 1000 news | Peter Brock stamps launched to celebrate 50 years

2 min read

A set of limited edition commemorative stamps have been released by Australia Post to celebrate 50 years since the late Peter Brock’s first Bathurst 1000 win.

Dubbed the ‘King of the Mountain’, Brock won the Great Race on nine occasions between 1972 and 1987 – the most of any driver to date.

This year marks the 50th anniversary since his first win with the Holden Dealer Team in a Holden Torana.

To celebrate it, five stamps have been released featuring some of the most iconic cars of Brock’s career.

The first of those features the 1972-winning Holden LJ Torana, which he won solo in that year’s 500-mile race.

Also featured is his LX Torana (1979) and VC Commodore (1980) which Brock shared with Jim Richards.

The VK Commodore (1984) Brock drove with Larry Perkins is also immortalised.

One of the more fascinating cars, the VL Commodore of 1987, is the last in the collection.

That year ‘Peter Perfect’ won with Peter McLeod and David Parsons, after the car that Parsons and Brock were initially sharing expired on lap 32 of the race before switching cars.

Only Craig Lowndes and Jim Richards have come close to Brock’s mantle, each with seven wins to their credit.

This weekend’s Bathurst 1000 is the last for the Holden brand in Supercars,

Next year, the car will be replaced by the Chevrolet Camaro under the new-for-2023 regulations dubbed Gen3.

« Bathurst is one of the most iconic races in the world and we want to appropriately recognise this historic end of an era for Holden in racing, » said Chris Payne, General Manager Chevrolet Racing.

« Sunday will be emotional for a lot of Holden fans, including ex-Holden and race team employees and ex-Dealer staff, the final time a Holden races in a Supercars event at Bathurst.

« It would be an outstanding way to farewell Holden from the Mountain if one of the Commodore. drivers can add to the brand’s 35 race wins at the circuit. »

The Bathurst 1000 gets underway on Sunday at 11:15am and will take in 161 laps of Mount Panorama.
