Serena Williams fought off a match point in her first-round match at Wimbledon and forced a third-set tiebreak against Harmony Tan, but it wasn’t enough. In a grueling match that lasted more than three hours, Tan came out on top, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6.
Williams, 40, jumped out to a 4-2 lead over Tan in the first set before the latter won five of six games to secure a 7-5 victory. Williams shook off the early adversity to dominate the second set, 6-1. In a back-and-forth third, Williams rallied to force a tiebreak and led 4-0 before Tan stormed back to win 10 of the last 13 points.
