WNBA: Desperate New York Liberty travel to face league-leading Connecticut Sun | NBA News

The top-seeded Sun will look to finish strong as they host the New York Liberty to begin a two-game homestand to close out the regular season on Wednesday night in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Connecticut (24-6) clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the WNBA playoffs after a 76-67 win at Phoenix on Saturday. The Sun have won a league-best 12 consecutive regular-season games and have not lost since a 79-57 setback versus Seattle in the Commissioner’s Cup on August 12.

The run of 12 straight wins matches the team’s all-time record set way back in 2006. They will have an opportunity to make franchise history with another victory on Wednesday night.

Sabrina Ionescu’s shot in the closing seconds was blocked, costing the Liberty in their 77-76 loss at Dallas last Saturday. The loss was New York’s league-worst seventh in a row heading into a crucial final two games against playoff contenders.

« We’ve been working on it for the past couple games, staying together, and we’re still working on it, » said Liberty forward Natasha Howard, who had 16 points and 11 boards against the Wings. « When we put everything together, then we do what we need to do and come out with a victory. »

After the Liberty’s game in Connecticut, New York returns home to host the Mystics on Friday in a game that could potentially decide the eighth seed.

New York has lost both meetings against Connecticut this season, falling 85-64 on the road on June 5 and 71-54 at home on July 11.
