What channel is Flames vs. Oilers on today? Time, TV schedule for first 2021-22 Battle of Alberta

It’s the first « Hockey Night in Canada » for the 2021-22 NHL season and this one is closing with a beauty. The Battle of Alberta opens a new chapter on Saturday night as the Flames head north up the QE II to face the Oilers.

Last season these two rivals faced off 10 times with Edmonton winning six of those meetings. In 2021-22 there will be four editions between now and the end of the season. Will it be like last season’s ho-hum contests or will it be more like 2019-20 when there was a war of words, questionable hits, stick flips and a fight between two players who don’t normally drop the gloves? And that’s not including the goalie fight.

Mike Smith will get the call in net for Edmonton, who won its lid-lifter over the Canucks 3-2 in a shootout. Jacob Markstrom is expected to be in between the pipes for the Flames. Saturday marks the season opener for the C of Red, who have won just twice in the past 20 season starters with an unimpressive 2-16-2 record. Those two wins came in 2009-10 vs. the Canucks and in 2001-02 vs. the Oilers. Calgary has also lost to its Alberta rivals in that span (2006-07, 2010-11, 2016-17, 2017-18).

Here’s everything you need to know to watch the first meeting of the Battle of Alberta for the 2021-22 NHL season.
