Rovman Powell injured avoiding ball kid

2 min read

West Indian skipper Rovman Powell has been involved in a frightening incident during his side’s T20 International loss to South Africa at Centurion.

In just the third over of South Africa’s innings, Powell attempted to chase down a shot from Quinton de Kock that went for four over long-off.

As the ball neared the rope, with Powell at full speed, a young ball kid bent down to retrieve the ball, forcing Powell to take evasive action.

He crashed into and over the LED advertising boards, before hitting a metal pole with enough force to move it.

He came to rest with his feet on the LED boards and much of his weight supported by the metal pole.

« Lets hope he’s OK, that’s nasty, » said commentator Mike Haysman.

The match was held up as Powell lay on the ground receiving attention on his knee, as replays showed the full force of the impact.

« This is the part we’re really concerned about, » said Shaun Pollock.

« I think he does brilliantly to hold most of his weight with his left hand. He’ll probably still be sore and a little bit damaged, but that could have been a lot worse.

« The ball boy thought he was doing his job, he was unaware of the big West Indian running down on him. »

Powell was able to resume, although he witnessed South Africa record a record-breaking run chase, overhauling the West Indian total of 258 with seven balls to spare.

Amazingly, De Kock’s 100 off 44 balls wasn’t even the quickest century of the match, with West Indies No.3 Johnson Charles blasting 118 from 46 balls.

In total, there was 517 runs and 35 sixes in the match, which are both records.
