Detroit Tigers 20-year veteran and future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera will play at least another season in the major leagues.
On Friday, Cabrera told Chis McCosky of the Detroit News that he has no intention of retiring at the end of the 2022 campaign and plans to honor the remainder of his contract with the Tigers, which is up after the 2023 season.
« No way am I going to quit…Next year I’m going to be right here, » Cabrera told McCosky.
Earlier in the week, Cabrera told reporters that he « didn’t feel well right now » and would discuss his status for 2023 with his agent and the team. Although, allegedly things have changed.
The 39-year-old has essentially one year remaining on an eight-year, $248 million deal with the Tigers. Cabrera will make $32 million next season, while his contract includes mutual options for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Cabrera’s 2022 season was shaping up to be his well-deserved swan song.
In April, Cabrera became the 33rd player in MLB history to reach 3,000 career hits.
Three months later, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred tabbed Cabrera and St. Louis Cardinals legend Albert Pujols as special All-Star selections for this July’s Midsummer Classic.
This season, Cabrera has four home runs and 36 RBI, slashing .268/.317/.332 in 91 games for the Tigers.
Since making his MLB debut with the then-Florida Marlins in 2003, Cabrera has been an All-Star 12 times, won seven Silver Sluggers, four batting titles, two MVP awards and an AL Triple Crown.
Cabrera has compiled 3,074 hits, 506 home runs and 1,840 RBI while slashing .309/.385/.526 in 2,678 career MLB games for the Marlins and Tigers.
