Devils put former first overall pick Jack Hughes on IR

The New Jersey Devils are off to a 2-0 start this season, but they are now going to have to play for an extended period of time without one of their brightest young stars.

Center Jack Hughes was placed on injured reserve Thursday after suffering a dislocated left shoulder during the team’s win over the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday. The 2019 first overall pick won’t need surgery, but he is out indefinitely according to an ESPN report.

Late in the first period on Tuesday, Hughes was hit hard into the boards by Kraken defenseman Jeremy Lauzon, resulting in the injury. The 20-year-old posted a pair of goals, including the overtime game-winner – during New Jersey’s season-opening win against the Chicago Blackhawks, and had an assist against Seattle before going down with the injury.

After scoring seven goals and adding 14 assists in 61 games as a rookie during the 2019-2020 season, Hughes tied for the team-high with 56 games played a year ago, while placing second in points (31), third in assists (20) and third in goals (11).

The Devils next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday against the Washington Capitals.
