Charlotte Caslick signs new four year sevens deal

Rugby Australia has landed another major coup with the retention of sevens superstar Charlotte Caslick on a monster deal through till the end of 2026.

Caslick, arguably the best sevens player on the planet, switched to rugby league in 2020 when COVID-19 shut down the annual World Series.

But the now 27-year-old played just two NRLW games for the Sydney Roosters before fracturing her spine and she returned to rugby in 2021.

Caslick is now set to spearhead Australia’s pursuit of more gold at the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

« For me it was a simple choice to commit to the sevens game, » Caslick said.

« If you are prepared to embrace the hard work that comes with being part of the world’s best and most challenging high performance program, then this is the sport to be involved in.

« We play a World Series. We play a World Cup. We play at the world’s two biggest multi-sport festivals: the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. There are easier options, but if you want to compete in the world’s best sport, this is where you need to be. »

Caslick is one of only two players in sevens history – male or female – to have won Olympic gold, Commonwealth Games gold, the sevens World Cup, the World Series, and multiple World Rugby player of the year awards.

« Charlotte is undoubtedly the ‘Empress’ of the sevens game, » Australia coach Tim Walsh said.

« She has redefined perceptions of women’s contact sport with her inimitable power, skill, intelligence and ruthlessness.

« Charlotte’s commitment to the Australian rugby sevens demonstrates the program’s pedigree, where our athletes are tested every day, travel the world together and play on the world’s biggest sporting stage. »

Caslick last year co-captained Australia to a historic ‘triple crown’ by winning the sevens World Cup, Commonwealth Games gold and the World Series.

She will lead the home side’s charge at the Sydney Sevens, which starts on Friday at Allianz Stadium.

« I know my best playing days are still ahead of me – look at Sharni Williams who, at 34-years-old, is an integral part of our squad and an inspiration to many, » Caslick said.

Australia are second behind New Zealand after three rounds of the 2022-23 women’s World Series.
