Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has put his support behind fullback Chevy Stewart after the rookie’s nightmare first half against the Broncos.

Stewart struggled to deal with bombs from Broncos halfback Jock Madden, dropping one that almost led to a Selwyn Cobbo.

He then suffered the same fate again in the 19th minute, which led to Ezra Mam kicking ahead and scoring.

Stewart was also found out of position eight minutes later with Billy Walters grubbering behind the Raiders defence and scoring.

Considering the fullback’s young age of 18, Stuart predicted it won’t be the first or last time he concedes errors.

« We’re transitioning into a completely new squad, a new football team, » he said post-match.

« There’s going to be more of those nights for a lot of those young blokes.

« I have to be patient with a lot of those boys because there’s going to be more nights like these, more errors in the process of them learning to be NRL players.

« It’ll take 50, 60 games before they’re really comfortable, but I’m prepared to be patient and I know my senior players are too, because these kids are good footy players. »

The 18-year-old debuted last week against the Titans with Jordan Rapana injured and impressed.

Despite his horror showing early, Stewart came back from it and fought hard, notably getting up after he was crunched by Kobe Hetherington in one of the biggest hits of the season.

The Raiders coach explained the second half showing indicated to him he’s got a serious first grader on his hands.

« If Chevy Stewart wasn’t a tough kid, he would’ve crumbled tonight … I know at 18 years of age I wasn’t ready to play NRL, at 18 years of age, him out there tonight, how he handled that second half showed me he’s got a future in the NRL, » he said.

« I don’t care about the dropped bomb, I don’t care about the try off it because there’ll be more of that. I’ve just got to be patient, our senior players will be patient with it because we’re transitioning into a completely new team with youth in very, very important positions on the field. »

Stuart went on to reveal his half-time chat to the youngster was simple.

« My message was ‘you’ll show me tonight in the next 40 minutes how much of a career you’ll have in the NRL by the way you respond’, » he said.

« I said ‘no one cares about the first 40’ and he responded the way we needed him to and for him too, but we know he’s a good footy player.

« There’s going to be those nights, remember he’s 18 years of age, he’s still year 12 age. »
