League great Peter Sterling says the halfback battle between Nathan Cleary and Adam Reynolds will go a long way to deciding the winner of the NRL grand final.

Cleary is aiming to add a premiership to his glowing list of accolades, while Reynolds is aiming to sign off from South Sydney in style before he joins the Broncos next season.

Reynolds has been under an injury cloud in the lead-up, fighting a groin injury, and Sterling said whether or not the 31-year-old takes kicking duties in the decider will show just how fit he is.

« I think everybody’s going to be looking to see the first kicks taken by South Sydney, whether it’s a goal kick or a kick in general play, » he told Nine’s Sport Sunday.

« If Adam Reynolds doesn’t kick, which he didn’t do much of last week [he’s not fit].

« Blake Taaffe had the responsibility and he’s an adequate kicker, but if I need a clutch kick, whether it’s a goal kick, a drop kick or a kick in general play, Adam Reynolds is your man, he’s first in line. If he doesn’t kick it hurts South Sydney’s chances.

« Adam Reynolds I think has the best kicking game in the competition. Nathan Cleary is right up there as well, a couple of kicks he’s come up with in the finals series has been superb.

« Whichever No.7 plays the better football is probably going to be on the winning side, that’s the amount of influence that they will have on the outcome. »
