NRL news | Brisbane Broncos sign Selwyn Cobbo on new deal to keep him until 2025

2 min read

The Broncos have announced a huge coup after securing one of the NRL’s brightest young talents on a new deal.

Excitement machine Selwyn Cobbo was set to become one of the game’s most in-demand free agents, had he decided to test the market, but the two-game Maroons star was convinced to stay with Brisbane until 2025 just four months before he was due to become a free agent.

Cobbo’s last deal was to run out at the end of next season, meaning that he could have started negotiating with rivals from November 1 this year had he decided not to recommit to the Broncos in the meantime.

His decision to re-sign gives the Broncos another big building block for the future as they attempt to recruit their way back to premiership contention.

The new deal, undoubtedly a lucrative upgrade on what the star winger was previously earning, is a reward for a breakout season with the explosive winger crossing for 11 tries in 13 NRL games.

He also set up a magical try for Dane Gagai on debut for the Maroons in Origin I and looks set to be a fixture on the representative scene for the next decade.

Broncos coach Kevin Walters was delighted with the news.

« Selwyn has a great sense of the game, great skill and anticipation and a feel for the game – he is a wonderful young player and this is great news for the Broncos, » he said.

« I just love the way Selwyn goes about his work – he’s always got a smile on his face and we love having him at the Broncos.

« The environment that Selwyn and his teammates are creating themselves is huge for us and we feel we’re on the right pathway as far as growing our culture as a team and a club. »
