IndyCar news | ‘Phenomenal’ Will Power will be hard to beat

3 min read

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon says IndyCar Series points leader Will Power is going to be hard to beat with only three races remaining.

The Team Penske pilot leads by just six points in the 2022 title race over Dixon, who is vying for his seventh crown.

With his most recent win on the streets of Nashville, Dixon put himself firmly in the frame for the title with a climb from fourth to second on the ladder.

Just 43 points separate first through fifth. Power’s teammate Scott McLaughlin is still in contention for the title, 58 points in arrears.

While Power has the upper hand, Dixon is anticipating a hard slog to beat his trans-Tasman rival to the chequered flag.

« I think Will has done a phenomenal job this year, » said Dixon.

« He has been much more mellow than normal, which is strange to see but good to see. It’s cool. He is doing an amazing job.

« He is going to be extremely tough to beat. Team Penske, they’re the benchmark as always and ones that you strive to beat every weekend.

« We’ll see where it goes. It’s going to be tough, and I’m sure the points are still tight between the top four or five, and anything is possible. »

Dixon has a habit of coming on strong late in the season.

Almost all of his title wins have come been come from behind efforts, the exception being his 2020 campaign that he led from start to finish.

« I think ’20 was the first time we ever started so strong, but I think all the other championships were really big comebacks in the second half, » said Dixon.

« Trust me, we don’t try to do that. We try to do it like ’20 where we start strong and lead the championship from the start. If we could put a finger on that, then we would work out both ends of the championship.

« But it’s tough, man. I think it goes back more to how the team functions. They just never give up, and I think when they get into situations where they can grasp on to it and hang on to it and make it possible, then they never lift, man. »

Gateway, Portland and Laguna Seca will host the final three races of the 2022 season.

The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway will take place on August 21 at 8:30am.
