Queensland summer carnival: Black Soil Bloodstock and Tony Gollan will be out to stop southern raiders

The southern raiders will be eyeing off Queensland summer carnival features but Black Soil Bloodstock and Tony Gollan have a team strong enough to stop them.

They wear black and white but they might as well be wearing maroon as the crack team of Black Soil Bloodstock horses aim to ward off the marauding masses from down south in the Queensland summer carnival.

With big-name horses from NSW and Victoria aiming to plunder summer carnival and Gold Coast Magic Millions spoils, the team of top Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan and Black Soil Bloodstock founder Brian Siemsen might have something to say about that.

Siemsen, an ex-South Sydney Rabbitohs front-rower, pulled off some big hits in his days on the footy field but is now making his mark on the racetrack.

What started as a teenage friendship with Gollan in Toowoomba led to Siemsen racing Group 1-winning brothers Spirit Of Boom and Temple Of Boom and then the creation of Black Soil Bloodstock in 2018.

Siemsen, who runs a successful global technology operation, is making giant waves in racing with his black and white colours some of the most recognisable in the state.

The flag-bearer for Black Soil is Isotope, the classy sprinting mare who has won five from 10 including scooping some Sydney prizemoney when scoring the Listed Darby Munro Stakes at Rosehill during the autumn carnival.

Isotope missed the spring carnival after a bout of colic but will be back this summer with her primary target a rich race on Gold Coast Magic Millions day in January.

Gollan is likely to have Group 1 ambitions for Isotope next year and she is an excitement machine to watch out for.

Other Black Soil horses such as Miami Fleiss, Garibaldi and The Move are aiming to make an impact on the summer carnival and the distinctive black and white colours will be seen in plenty of big races.

Two-year-old rookie colt Nettuno, raced in partnership with some other big hitters in racing, could be one to watch for on Magic Millions day.

“Black Soil could potentially have five runners on Magic Millions day and that’s something I would be very proud of,” Siemsen said.

“The really good part of what we have been able to do is that we are regularly winning races, not just winning a race here or a race there.

“And we are not doing it just with one or two horses, but a whole team of horses across the distance range. I’ve got to say that seeing my colours win in Sydney (with Isotope) was an incredibly proud moment.”
