Champion jockey Glen Boss announces retirement after stellar career

Champion jockey Glen Boss has announced he will retire, ending a stellar career in the saddle.

The 52-year-old will ride for the final time this Saturday at Caulfield, where he will ride Spanish Mission in the Group 2 Zipping Classic.

The news broke on Thursday night, with tributes flowing immediately for the legendary rider, as he reminisced on his final moments with three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva.

“It’s given me so many great thrills, » Boss told Channel 7.

« I’ve made a decision that I’m retiring from professional race-riding after Saturday.

« To be at the level I want to be at all the time and to be at the level that I should be at, you’ve got to be all chips-in. Especially in the last three months, I felt that I was wavering.

« That final moment with her (in the 2005 Melbourne Cup), that moment where I took my hands off the reins, it just showcased her.

« That’s the greatest moment I have ever had on an animal. »

Boss’ three wins in the Melbourne Cup aboard Makybe Diva were the clear highlights of his career, as well as four Cox Plates and two Golden Slippers.
