Bathurst 1000: Ian Moss roasted for national anthem cheat sheet gaffe, reaction, Supercars

Aussie music legend Ian Moss might want his time over after he committed a cardinal sin singing the national anthem at Bathurst.

Australian rock legend Ian Moss faced questions after he was spotted using what some viewers thought was a cheat sheet while singing the national anthem at the Bathurst 1000.

The popular member of Cold Chisel produced a rousing rendition of his own song Tucker’s Daughter on the hill at Mount Panorama, but his performance of Advance Australia Fair raised some eyebrows.

Moss was given the honour of singing the national anthem at Mount Panorama with the drivers and teams watching on ahead of the start of the race.

But eagle-eyed fans noticed Moss was constantly glancing down at a piece of paper perched against a large speaker in his performance area.

They suggested the 66-year-old was using a cheat sheet to help him remember the lyrics, even though he only sang one verse of the anthem.

Moss made no effort to disguise it either, regularly looking down at the sheet after every line.

Social media quickly lit up as viewers labelled the Aussie music icon a “disgrace” for not knowing the words to his own country’s national anthem.

Newspaper editor Adam Hill ripped in to Moss, tweeting: “I cannot believe the bloke singing out national anthem needs to read the words to the song.

“Disgraceful. Doesn’t even hide it when he looks at each line. Poor form. #Bathurst1000.”

“I rate Ian Moss but man that was hard to watch,” sports reporter Adam Murray said.

“Surely Ian Moss wasn’t reading off a cheat sheet at Bathurst, when he just butchered the National Anthem!!!,” one person commented on social media.

“I love #IanMoss but he’s having a Meatloaf moment at #Bathurst,” another said, referring to Meatloaf’s infamous performance at the AFL Grand Final that went down like a lead balloon.

It’s not the first time Moss has played at Australia’s most famous race. He has performed with Cold Chisel at the racetrack in the past and has also done several hot laps at Bathurst.

“I have fond memories of the early days with Cold Chisel, including playing on a stage set up inside the Mount Panorama racetrack,” he told the Western Advocate in 2018.

“I have done the hot lap a few times at Mount Panorama. I have also played, with Cold Chisel, at Bathurst jail.”
