Bad campaigns in 2020 and relegation to Serie B: the year of Figueira

The 2020 season started with hopes for the Figueirense. With maintenance on Serie A in 2015, Alvinegro started the season with Hudson Coutinho in charge of the team and dreamed of the Santa Catarina tri-championship. The campaign, however, was trivial and the club fired the coach before the end of the state. In other national and international competitions, new disappointments. The team did not go far in the First League, Copa do Brasil and Sul-Americana, in addition to being relegated to Serie B of the Brazilian Championship.

State

After winning the Santa Catarina Championship in 2014 and 2015, Figueirense was one of the favorites to win the cup in 2020 and win the tri. But that was not what happened on the pitch. On the return, he even fought for one of the places in the decision, but ended up in the second place and out of the final.

Premier League

In the first national competition of the season, Figueira fell in the group with Atlético-MG, América-MG and Flamengo in the First League. Alvinegro finished in the second position of the group and ended up being out of the second phase of the competition, frustrating his fans again.

Humiliating elimination in the Brazil Cup

Inspired by the 2007 runner-up, Figueirense entered the Copa do Brasil seeking the unprecedented title. But once again the team did not do well and ended up humiliatingly eliminated.

In the first two phases of the competition, Alvinegro eliminated Lajeadense and Sampaio Corrêa without many difficulties. Then he faced Ponte Preta and, after a goalless draw in Florianópolis, he was defeated 5-0 in Campinas-SP. The consolation “prize” was the place in the Copa Sudamericana.

Frustration in international competition

Figueira debuted in the Copa Sudamericana in the second phase against Flamengo. In the first leg, the team won 4-2 and opened the advantage for the return. However, in Cariacica-ES, Fla won 3-1 and, by the goal scored away from home, won the classification for the third phase of the competition.

Bad campaign and relegation in Serie A

Figueirense spent much of Serie A in the relegation zone. The team had very few, if any, high points in the competition. With no reaction power in the final stretch, the club ended up relegated two rounds in advance. With only 32% of success, Figueira finished Serie A in 18th position with only 37 points and the relegation in the "account".

Coaches rotation in season

The year was also a year of coaching for the Alvinegra team. Hudson Coutinho, hired at the end of 2015, led the team until the end of the state championship. After having no more chances to reach the decision, he returned to the position of assistant and the club brought Vinícius Eutrópio. The coach "lasted" in the team for just over four months and was fired after a bad result in Serie A.

Algiers Fucks, who had led the team on other occasions, returned to the club, but after just over a month, he resigned for lack of good results. The last to take over was Marquinhos Santos, who left Fortaleza and took over the team with the mission to free Figueira from relegation, but failed. The coach continues on the team for the 2017 season with the goal of taking the club back to Serie A.
